About

Blair Road Community Garden is one of the largest community gardens in DC, with more than five acres of garden space bordered by several streets and several garden neighbors.

We share Oglethorpe street to the North with our furry neighbors at the Humane Rescue Alliance and Blair Road to the West with the daily commuters. We share McDonald Place and South Dakota Avenue to the South with the Greater St. Paul Baptist Church. The church graciously lets us use their meeting hall twice a year for our Spring and Fall garden meetings and we have returned the favor with a plot in our garden in which the church can grow their fresh fruits and veggies. We are bordered by New Hampshire Avenue to the East and the recently completed DC Legacy Memorial Park. Please come for a visit.

Our gardeners say the spot is “relaxing and quiet.” Walking down into the center, one barely hears the traffic. The views of the skyline are a delight. The garden is divided into plots of all sizes, with larger plots grandfathered in from previous years. All new plots are approximately 25′ x 25′. Annual fees are based on plot size. Fees are used for general garden repair, tools, compost, and an annual garden picnic. The garden has been in operation for at least 40 years, and there is always some annual turnover of plots.

Our Leadership

Elections are held annually in the Fall for every position. An executive committee consists of a president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary. The executive committee is joined by four section representatives and an at-large representative. Garden officers for the 2016-2017 garden year are:

  • Andrew Robie – Board Chair
  • Jesse Fenty – Vice Chair
  • Denny May – Treasurer
  • Shannon Collier – Secretary
  • Joy Williams – At Large Board Member
  • Beulah Brock – Section A Captain
  • Monica Sirri – Section B Captain
  • Roberta Youmans – Section C Captain
  • Nona Kumah – Section D Captain

Together the Board works to enforce National Park Service Garden Rules and the Blair Road Community Garden rules according to our governing By-Laws.

One of the main rules of National Park Service community gardens is that gardeners must use organic methods to grow their vegetables, herbs, and fruit. Gardeners are expected to pick up trash throughout the garden, and to maintain garden pathways free of weeds and debris.
